Climbing Bispen with Tindekompaniet via Østeggen
Bispen is a true classic and one of our absolute favorites. Østeggen offers magical views and an airy split right above Trollstigen – an elegant line that provides both excitement and a great mountain feeling. This is also a less visited route, which makes the experience even more unique and provides a truly beautiful nature experience in the heart of Romsdalen.
Tour description Østeggen
We usually start from the Trollstigen plateau and follow the path towards Bispevatnet before turning off towards the start of Østeggen. It usually takes 1–1.5 hours to reach the entrance where the climb begins. A little before this we put on a helmet, harness and rope, as there are some exposed steep sections that must be passed first.
The route offers varied climbing on mostly firm and fine rock in a fantastic mountain environment. Along the way we encounter climbing in rough, steep and blocky terrain , where you have to use both your head, balance and some physical strength. A little experience with climbing is therefore good. In some places it can feel airy, especially when you look straight down into the valley floor of Isterdalen far below your feet.
For some, climbing shoes may be an advantage on this route, especially if you are not completely used to climbing. However, a slightly stiffer mountain shoe or a good approach shoe is also fine – feel free to ask your guide what is best for you.
We climb several pitches to the top, where the most difficult section is around grade 5. However, most of the trip is on easier terrain with good flow.
Descent
We follow the normal road down, which is a steep and exposed path that leads us back to the parking lot via Bispevatnet.
Level and recommendations
The hike requires good physical fitness , as there is a steep path up to the entrance and a good amount of elevation gain in total – around 800 elevation gain to the top . This is a slightly more demanding hike than the North Face on Romsdalshorn , and has a climbing grade of around grade 5-/5 .
Experience with altitude and mountain terrain is therefore an advantage. Climbing experience is not a requirement but very good!
We usually start at 8:00 AM, and the entire trip takes 6–8 hours , depending on conditions and group dynamics.
