Climb Store Skagastølstind with a guide!

Store Skagastølstind, better known as Storen , is Norway's third highest mountain and perhaps the most legendary of them all. This is a trip for those who want a true alpine experience , where climbing, views and history merge into one of the greatest classics in Norwegian mountain sports.

Tour description Normal route via Vigdals or Heftyes

We start early from Turtagrø , and follow the path into Skagadalen as the light comes over the mountains. After a steady climb through the valley we reach Bandet , where the small stone hut marks the transition to the more alpine terrain. It normally takes us around three hours to get there.

From Bandet the mountain gets steeper, and we move into sections with cleavage and easy climbing . Up towards Hjørnet we follow a natural line in the mountain, and on the most exposed sections we secure with ropes for safe and controlled progress. When we stand on Hjørnet the terrain opens up – from here it becomes more exposed and airy.

Further towards the top we follow the classic normal route. The first part goes through the Gallery , a marked climbing section that leads us up to a wide ledge. From here we have two (or more!) established options further:

  • Vigdal's Sva

  • Heftyes Gutter

Both offer around ten meters of steeper climbing at grade 3 to 5 , before the terrain eases again and leads us up towards the summit ridge. From here it is a short walk to the very top of Store Skagastølstind , 2,405 m above sea level – one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Norway?

The return route follows a different route than the ascent. We rappel 40 meters down a chute just off the ascent route, which takes us down to just below Hjørnet. We then rappel past the bends before continuing down to Bandet and following the same route back to Turtagrø.

Level and recommendations

The trip is suitable for those who are in good physical shape and enjoy steep and exposed terrain. You do not need any previous climbing experience – I will teach you what you need along the way – but some experience with climbing or rappelling will allow you to relax more and have an even better experience. It is important that you are comfortable with heights.

    • Good physical fitness: You should be able to walk at least 800–1500 meters in altitude in a day, with a capacity of approximately 400 meters in altitude per hour.

    • Climbing experience is an advantage, but not necessary. Storen is a steep and airy peak so it is very important to be comfortable with heights. You can participate in an introductory climbing course with us if you want to prepare yourself better. Please contact us.

    • Have a good day. nok health for traveling in exposed terrain in the high mountains.

  • We usually start early in the morning to get a good rhythm through the day and be back at Turtagrø in the afternoon. The trip itself normally takes between 8 and 10 hours, depending on conditions and pace.

From Turtagrø we don't spend more than about three hours up to Bandet. If we see that time is running out already here, we have to make an assessment of the total time spent and whether it is reasonable to continue. Sometimes this means we have to re-evaluate whether the day is right for us – safety and capacity always come first.

  • If you book a trip outside of peak season (May/June and September/October), we offer a favorable price and flexible booking terms!
